The United States Environmental Protection Agency is the primary federal agency tasked with environmental protection in the US. It was founded in 1970 via an executive order issued by then President Richard Nixon. The EPA is led by an administrator that is appointed by the President. While not a cabinet level department, the Administrator is a cabinet ranked public official.
The EPA is divided into 10 “Regions.” Each region has the responsibility to administrate and enforce environmental regulations within its geographic area. Some states enforce their own regulations that are at least as stringent as the EPA’s. California, which is located in Region 9, enforces its own environmental regulations. However, in some instances, the EPA will conduct enforcement in California.
