What is an EPA ID Number?

An EPA ID number is a unique identifier that allows hazardous wastes to be tracked from “cradle-to-grave.” It also allows local and state agencies to determine what hazardous waste regulations apply to a facility and provides a mechanism for cost recovery of the hazardous waste program and levy hazardous waste taxes.


For businesses generate less than 220 pounds per month of a federally-regulated waste, or any amount of a non-RCRA (non-federally) regulated hazardous waste, an EPA ID number can be obtained by filling out Form 1358 and submitting it to the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC). If your site generates more than 220 pounds per month of federally-regulated waste, you will need to apply for a Federal EPA ID# using EPA Form 870012.

Keeping your EPA ID number active

Facility owners must complete the “Electronic Verification Questionnaire” to keep EPA ID numbers active.

Obtaining a temporary EPA ID numbers

Facilities that do not routinely generate hazardous waste, but still have instances where hazardous waste must be removed from the site (for example during asbestos abatement) must obtain a temporary EPA ID number to legally remove the waste from a facility. Temporary EPA ID numbers can be obtained by online at the Department of Toxic Substances Control’s website.
